Verzenio (abemaciclib): Insurance Coverage and Denials
A plain-language guide to CDK4/6 inhibitor coverage, why insurers deny it, and where to get cancer-specific help.
Verzenio is an oral targeted therapy and a CDK4/6 inhibitor. It blocks the CDK4 and CDK6 proteins that allow cancer cells to progress through the cell cycle and divide, slowing tumor growth. The FDA has approved Verzenio, in combination with endocrine therapy, for hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, including the adjuvant treatment of certain node-positive, high-risk early breast cancer and the treatment of advanced or metastatic disease.
Insurers commonly require prior authorization and often verify hormone receptor and HER2 status, nodal status and other high-risk features in the adjuvant setting, and the endocrine therapy partner. Denials and delays can stem from missing pathology details or specialty-pharmacy dispensing requirements.
If your plan denies coverage, you generally have the right to an internal appeal followed by an independent external review under federal rules such as 45 CFR 147.136. For specialized cancer help, contact the PAN Foundation, Patient Advocate Foundation, Triage Cancer, CancerCare, or Eli Lilly's Verzenio copay and patient-assistance programs.
